ぽっちゃり体型の人は飛行機で肩身の狭い思いをしたことがあるかもしれない。そんな体験を打ち明けたイギリス女性の声が反響を呼んでいる。

隣の女性に言われた「もう座れない」の言葉

イングランド・シュロップシャー州出身のカースティ・リアン（30歳）はぽっちゃり女子のひとり。からだの大きな人向けの旅行のアドバイスを定期的に紹介し、TikTokでは13万人のフォロワーをもつインフルエンサーだ。

そんな彼女が最近明かしたのが、スペイン行きの飛行機に乗ったときの苦い体験だ。カースティが自分の席に座っているとひとりの女性がやってきて、自分の座る席がカースティの隣だと理解するとため息。カースティはこの時を振り返り「彼女はそこに座りたくないのが明らかだった」と話す。スペースがあまりないことを謝ったそうだが、その女性から返事はなかったという。

さらに飛行中はずっとアームレストをできるだけ下げていたが、カースティいわく「98％は下がったけれど、最後の2％はとても痛かった」そうだ。

しかし、そんなカースティの努力はむなしく、その女性は数列後ろに座っていた友人に「もう彼女の隣には座れない！」と声をかけたという。聞こえないふりをしていたというカースティだが、「穴があったら入りたかった」と、その気まずい体験を明かした。

「あなたが謝る必要はない！」の声

カースティは、電車の自動改札を通り抜けるときは、体を横向きにしないといけないほどのぽっちゃりさん。飛行機の狭い座席は、たしかに彼女のからだには狭すぎるだろう。このときは黙って過ごすしかできなかったというカースティだが、もうこの気持ちをそのままにするつもりはないという。

こういった場面では、客室乗務員に空いている座席がないか尋ねることが多いそうだ。また、「隣に座った人が不快でいることはわかるが、それで意地悪をしたり、暴言を吐いたりする行動は不要だと思う」と語っている。

このカースティの投稿には多くのフォロワーが反応し、「サイズ制限を設けるべき。ぽっちゃりさんには２席分の予約を義務付けるべき」という声や「相手の女性を責めることはできない」なんて声もあった。しかし、大半のフォロワーがカースティの体験に同情を示し、「あなたが謝る必要はない！」というコメントが多数寄せられた。

からだの大きさも身長も人によって千差万別だ。航空会社には誰もが快適に搭乗できるような取り組みが求められるのかもしれない。
