It’s time again this year for the neighborhood’s most important event, BOS!

5回目となる今回は、いよいよ街の一大イベント、「BOS(ブッシュウィック・オープン・スタジオ)」についてをご紹介。

An exhibition, “Made in Ridgewood,” held at Yasue Maetake’s studio in June 2015 at Ridgewood, a neighborhood next to Bushwick. (Photo by Reggie Shiobara)

New York was in the midst of a real estate bubble when I started looking for an apartment based just on a personal whim of wanting to leave Manhattan, my longtime home, and move to Brooklyn, Queens, or anywhere actually. So just as expected, I ran into much difficulty finding a place within my budget. After fighting against heavy odds, I found my current apartment through an online ad. The layout and amount of space were perfect, but a problem was presented by “Area: Bushwick.”

“Where’s that? I’ve never heard of it.” From the Internet I learned that it was a neighborhood in Brooklyn, bordering Queens. A small article also caught my eye then about an annual art event, Bushwick Open Studios, known as BOS. Open studio events are popular in New York; artists open their workspaces to the public so that people can see up close the artists in action and their productions. The event is often held by area. So, I thought, if this is a neighborhood where many artists reside, it can’t be bad.

Sculptor Yasue Maetake. In the studio she established in 2012, there’s a first floor space that can be used for presentations, and a basement where she creates her work. This photo was taken in the basement, an expansive space where she can do demanding work like welding metal.

In 2012, when I had settled into that apartment and was enjoying the little inconveniences that set this area apart from Manhattan, I came across another small article.
    “BOS taking place this weekend!”
I had completely forgotten about BOS. I immediately went on a walk around the neighborhood. Signs were everywhere—on apartment windows and doors of buildings, restaurants, and cafés—indicating that there was a BOS participant inside.

“It was also around 2012 that I realized that things were moving in Bushwick, the community next door. The first time I participated in BOS was in 2013, with an exhibition at a place called the Active Space. The second time was last year, when a curator I know gathered artists from Ridgewood for a group exhibition called ‘Made in Ridgewood” at my studio, so I participated as one of the artists. I wanted to get across the message that it’s not just the Bushwick artists that are buzzing.” So says Yasue Maetake with a smile. Yasue is a sculptor who came to New York as a student in 2004, and has been living in Ridgewood in Queens, a neighborhood next to Bushwick, since 2006. In this community where many immigrants live, Yasue learned what it is like to make a new land your true home.  Six years after her move, she established her own studio. She says that this was necessary to firmly establish herself in the neighborhood as an artist as well.

“Since it took time to establish myself here, I was frankly a little surprised by the excitement next door. But looking at this objectively, I realized that if a function like BOS, which is simply a neighborhood event, were to be held somewhere out in the country, information on it would not have spread this far. Be it good or bad, New York is always sending out messages. That’s why information on Bushwick as well spreads throughout the world in an instant. For an artist, participating in BOS is a quick way to exchange information.”

2013年、泰江さんの初めてのBOSとなったアクティブ・スペースでの「Amagoi」 (2006-2013年、高93インチ、幅/奥不定 鉄、綿生地、ガラス、和紙、ペーパーオンコラージュ)の展示風景(撮影;前竹泰江) Yasue Maetake’s Amagoi (2006-2013, H93", variable width and length) made of steel, cotton fabric, glass, rice paper, and collage on paper, at Active Space in BOS.

Indeed, BOS, which was launched in 2006 with the participation of 85 studios, had, at the time of my first encounter in 2012, expanded into an event held at 500 sites, including neighboring areas. It was no longer limited to the art world, but had become an event that directly appealed to the general population as well. With the BOS signs beckoning me to open their doors, I did so with much anticipation and found art ranging from what looked like the summer projects of school children to uber professional works of art.

The free and magnanimous works and environment were a pleasant shock. They emitted a totally different aura from the art you regularly see in galleries and museums.
I immediately wanted to play a part in this event. When I looked into the conditions for participation, I found information that said that I register my name and contact information, and pay a participation fee of either 35 dollars or become a volunteer to help run the event. That was quite a surprise since I thought stricter terms would apply. With these conditions, anyone who wanted to show, sell, or communicate something could participate.
People could participate just as they wish, without having to follow instructions or trends set down by others. That was BOS.

Last year at BOS, we put up a canvas on the side of a truck to exhibit live painting. Perhaps because it was a nice sunny Saturday afternoon, the neighborhood was bustling, with many more people than we imagined.

So, for my first participation in BOS two years ago, since I didn’t have a studio I called on friends from work and had them display photos and art in a rented moving truck based on a concept of a simple mobile gallery.
It was a sunny weekend. A big crowd turned out, and many more people that I had imagined came to see the works. They asked questions, which we answered, and conversation ensued.

“Because of its pedestrian nature and high population density, people in New York enjoy a unique kind of casual conversation,” says Alyssa Gorelick, an artist creating works that employ techniques of photography, painting, printmaking and sculpture. “There are so many artists living and working in Bushwick, that sometimes a conversation that begins by running into another artist at the market leads to a studio visit, a show or a collaboration.”

Alyssa lives in my apartment building. In fact our acquaintance began with her striking up a conversation with me. And last year, when we learned that we were both going to participate in BOS, we began exchanging information. Alyssa’s studio was located in a building well known in the community as a center for young artists.

Alyssa Gorelick and her daughter Zola. While talking with Alyssa, I learned by chance that her grandmother, Shirley Gorelick, was one of the founders of SOHO20, the gallery I introduced in Vol. 02.

Alyssa is also one of the co-founders of Regina Rex, an artist-run gallery that was one of the first galleries to open in the building. “The gallery began as a collaboration consisting of 13 artists. In 2010 the rent was affordable and studio space was a viable platform for an array of possibilities without the pressure of the market place. We decided that we wanted to have it be strictly a curatorial project rather than a space for exhibiting our own work – so that the dialogue was not just amongst ourselves but with other artists we wanted to engage with”
Alyssa had a clear reason why she keeps participating in BOS as an artist.
“There is a lot of diversity in the crowds that come through. I enjoy talking to a range of people; people who are a part of a contemporary art dialog as well as people who don’t often look at art.”

Alyssa was raised in California and moved to NY for college and settled down in Bushwick in 2008. She formed her creative community through the artist-run gallery, which was built through various dialogues. Her experience echoes the goals of Arts in Bushwick, the all-volunteer group that organizes BOS: “To be deeply rooted in the community.” Through BOS and other programs, this organization also serves as a bridge between the new artist community and long-time residents. This brought to mind the refreshing, smiling face of Yasue who, precisely because she was an international student, was able to establish herself as an artist through a sense of belonging to the community, backed by a strong determination to make her life here. Another important role of Arts in Bushwick is to prepare integrated, all-inclusive and sustainable platforms open to participation by all. Built by such people, this place had the power to take in everyone for whatever reason they may have had to come here, even people like me who came here simply on the impulse of wanting to live in a completely different place.

The opening of the “Making History” exhibition held last year by Arts in Bushwick, the organizer of BOS, in a run up to the 10th anniversary. With the space overflowing with works by a total of 400 artists, it was very impressive indeed. A book on this is scheduled to come out right before BOS is held this year.

Today, BOS has come to be widely known as the “largest open studio in the world,” and you can now often see prominent art dealers and collectors at the event. If there is some way I can give back to this place, it would be to keep on participating in BOS as a resident of this neighborhood with the same sense of elation that I felt when I first came across it.
The other day, I ran into a photographer friend by chance and we talked about whether we will be participating this year. Anticipations are rising in the neighborhood because, yes, BOS will be commemorating its 10th anniversary this coming October 1-2! If you happen to see our truck gallery “14’ CUBE,” please stop by. We look forward to talking with you!

Our truck gallery “14’ CUBE” is parked near the L train’s Jefferson Street Station every year. This year again we’ll be displaying art centering on photographs, so if you see this truck, please stop by to say hello!
